About Regulations for Liposuction Clinics in Melbourne
The Regulations governing private health facilities in Victoria were updated on 1 July 2018 to ensure better safety and quality of care for patients. These amendments were made to the Health Services (Health Service Establishments) Regulations 2013 (the Regulations) and Health Services Act 1988 (the Act).
These regulations detail which procedures are defined as surgeries, and states that all surgeries must be performed in a facility registered with the Department of Health and Human Services. Liposuction is considered a surgery.
How regulations affect liposuction procedures
Liposuction in Melbourne must be performed in a registered facility according to regulations. Anaesthesia can also only be provided in a registered facility. This includes intravenous sedation and anything more than local anaesthetic, and it encompasses the anaesthetic administered during the range of liposuction procedures provided by Sculpture Clinic.
Although the Regulations allow for a small amount, 200ml in total, of lipoaspirate (the fluids containing fat cells removed during liposuction) to be removed in unregistered facilities, this does not denote a complete liposuction procedure. More likely, for example, it is a post procedure touch up taking place at a consultation in an unregistered facility sometime post initial procedure.
